As part of our campaign to get a bit of romance between microsoft and salesforce started we thought we would show another way to get these two to like each other. salesforce chatter likes Microsoft Dynamics CRM showed how to chatter like directly within a Microsoft Dynamics web page now it was time to do it again with sharepoint.

By using the fluxgain Like button, sharepoint pages can be quickly liked/shared within salesforce chatter for further collaboration. Its a facebook like button for a social intranet.

We built this out using Sharepoint 2013 online with no need to get into .NET, all that was needed was a bit of HTML and a web browser. Our Sharepoint online trial has since expired but the public website for it is still currently active - http://fluxgain-public.sharepoint.com/

If the site is no longer active here is a screenshot of the front web page with the fluxgain Like button and some other social buttons.

fluxgain Like using salesforce chatter on Sharepoint

It takes 3 steps to add the static image fluxgain Like button for salesforce chatter into the sharepoint header

  1. Upload custom image into sharepoint
  2. Generate the like button HTML
  3. Update sharepoint header with the generated HTML

If you are familiar with Sharepoint 2013 it shouldn't take more than 5 - 10 minutes to set up.

Upload custom image into sharepoint

Find an image you want to use as the fluxgain Like button. Or copy one of the images mentioned in static like button install instructions to your local computer.

Then upload this image from your local computer to sharepoint 2013 as a "site asset" by

  1. Log into into sharepoint 2013 online
  2. Click on "Sites" at top of screen
  3. Click on the cog image toward the top right of the screen
  4. Click "Site Contents"
  5. Click "Site Assets"
  6. Then finally "New Document" to upload your custom button image

The URL of the image can be found by clicking on the newly created document which is needed for the next step.

Generate the like button HTML

Using the URL of the image and the fluxgain like button generator the HTML for the like button can be created.

The like button generator can be found in either button.fluxgainlike.com or in the appexchange package fluxgain Like Lite

To create the HTML

  1. Goto button.fluxgainlike.com
  2. Change type from "link" to "image"
  3. Change "Image URL" to the URL of the image inside sharepoint
  4. Click "Refresh"
  5. Optionally test the generated like button by clicking image next to "How it looks". The image should now be the one that is saved in sharepoint
  6. The generated HTML will be used inside sharepoint

Update sharepoint header with the generated HTML

Now with the like button HTML generated, the header within sharepoint needs to be updated.

  1. Log into into sharepoint 2013 online
  2. Click on "Sites" at top of screen
  3. Click on the sharepoint site to update, in our example it was "Public Site"
  4. Click on "Site" on the ribbon menn
  5. Click on "Edit Site Elements"
  6. Click in the "Header" section on the page
  7. Click "Edit Source"
  8. Then paste in the generated code.
  9. Finally save the page.

At this point you will have a fluxgain Like button appearing in the header of every page on your sharepoint site ready to be used.

In our example we also

  1. added other social buttons in addition to the fluxgain like button to show different button styles can be matched
  2. added the fluxgain like button to the main page content to show other places where the like button could be added.
